THE TREE COZY PROJECT NEEDS YOUR VOTE:

The Tree Cozy Project has been shortlisted for The Jubilee Peoples Millions

Please ring 0871 626 88 32.
Calls cost 11p and you can ring up to 10 times from the same number.

The Tree Cozy project seeks to connect over 2000 people of all ages and backgrounds in the making of a vibrant piece of public art within Jubilee Gardens, Crewe. Older people will work with all ages of the community to deliver workshops in schools, community centres, residential older people’s homes, ethnic minority groups, and people with learning and physical disabilities, to create knitted tree sleeves, lamppost banners, and tree plaques.

The legacy of the project for future generations to enjoy will be a wrought iron archway, and railings, and the production of an animated film that will educate a younger audience about our environmental responsibilities. A grand Mad Hatters Tea Party will showcase the project and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style. The project aims to reach over 8000 local people.

Snazzy Squares!

Once you have mastered the art of knitting, you may prefer to knit straight garter(knit) stitch squares.
Or, you might want to use this opportunity to try something new out.
Maybe you would like to try out a new stitch, try knitting with two or more colours, or even knit a motive and stitch it to a square.

If you are an experienced knitter, or you have been learning the basics and want to try something a little bit different, you have come to the right place!

There are going to be literally hundreds (if not thousands) of squares that will be joined together to make our fabulous tree cozy project, so you want your square to be noticed , right?

Over the next 12 months we'll be adding to our IDEAS PAGE, where you can gain free access to many patterns and creative knitting techniques in order for you to learn as well as contribute to our wonderful community project.

Click on each link that is next to the knitted square you would like to have a go at and it will take you to a new website containing the patterns and techniques you need to make a square with a difference.

If you are stuck on any of the patterns, why not leave a comment and we'll get back to you with some handy tips!

Here are 4 taster squares to get you started.

Modular Rainbow: use one colour to perfect the technique, or many colours if you want to try something a bit different!

Afhan Squares for the more experienced knitter, or why not try improving your skills with these patterns!

Happy Sun Square: You can also embellish your knitted square with knitted motives!

Last weekend saw the launch event of the Tree Cozy Project.
Held at The Wool Shop in Crewe, local crafters and the towns officials attended in support of the project and got the the project off to a super start!
We we're joined by the Granada TV crew, and the local radio station Red Shift Radio.

Many thanks to Pam Girwood at The Wool Shop for hosting a wonderful event and to everyone who attended and knitted a square to add to the collection of knitted squares that will grow and grow over the next 12 months.
